      Highlights •Two order planning policies based on inventory rationing are developed.•Drop-shipping is used as an order fulfillment alternative.•A comprehensive numerical experiment on order planning is conducted.•Order planning policies are profitable and service-oriented.•New policies have no negative impact on picking efficiency.•New policies show significant gains as compared to conventional FIFO policy.
