    • Abstract:
      This article discusses the key features of the common European framework for work-based learning (WBL) of the "Developing European Work Based Learning Approaches and Methods" (DEWBLAM) project (2003-2006). It examines the context of recent European initiatives and comments on the potential implications for policy, practice and theory, with specific reference to the triple helix metaphor of economic development and lifelong learning. It also focuses on why WBL in Higher Education and Training (HET) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) represents a challenge to educational institutions in Europe and how, on the other hand, it can provide substantial benefits to innovation in educational policies and practices and make a significant contribution to the development of lifelong learning.
